High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?
Recognising potential and developing talent
Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.
Tailored lessons
Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.
Rich opportunities and activities
Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.
Opening doors to wider experiences
Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Woy Woy South Public School HPGE occurs in everyday practice. Many students have high potential, and we help that potential to grow into something powerful.
- Stage 2 and Stage 3 enrichment classes offer students the chance to engage with the curriculum at an accelerated pace and progress to extension activities.
- Teachers identify students' learning needs in K-6 classrooms and use evidence-informed teaching practices to challenge and extend students. We provide differentiated learning pathways, including students regularly setting individual goals for literacy, numeracy and social goals.
- Through our LEAP program, our supportive classroom environments promote developing a growth mindset combined with organisation and collaboration skills.
- Our teachers engage in professional learning to support the diverse needs of all students, including our high potential and gifted learners.
Every student is individual, so opportunities are flexible and diverse.
- Students deepen strengths through public speaking, academic competitions, STEM activities, debating competitions, spelling bees, peer mentoring and student leadership as well as participation in whole school inclusion and positive behaviour for learning initiatives.
- Performing arts talent is celebrated regularly through various showcases for our drama, choir and dance groups.
- Leadership grows for Stage 3 through school leadership roles, technology leaders, sports leaders, cultural leaders, Top Blokes and Cool Connections programs, Bluey Buddies and peer mentoring.
- Partnership with Brisbane Waters Secondary College has opened up the opportunity for Stage 2 students to participate in the Futures Academy Sport Program. HPGE students identified for the talent program attend BWSC for specialist training and elite coaching.
- Opportunities for physically gifted students are provided through multiple PSSA sport events, swimming carnivals, athletics and cross country. Year 2 -6 can participate in Cross Country Crew every Friday morning. Our school provides numerous PSSA school representative team sport competitions including rugby, netball, touch footy, cricket, AFL and basketball.
Our students participate in a wide range of statewide programs to extend and enrich student potential.
- Students participate in opportunities such Premier’s Spelling Bee, ICAS Mathematics, English, Spelling, Digital Technologies, Science and Writing.
- The Representative School Sport Pathway and PSSA events enable our students to trial and compete in sports at regional, state and national levels, fostering discipline, commitment and collaboration.
- Our Environment Partnerships with Rumbalara deepens our students’ intellectual curiosity while developing innovation and collaboration on environment.
- Statewide and NSW Department of Education support is available for high potential and gifted students, and we help with entries, preparation and reflection so every experience feeds back into learning.
